The day started with
despair and ended in despair, but had some tremendous pluses in-between.
Despite many phone calls
and repeated pleas we headed off with only nine players. The journey was something
of a mystery tour as our small band got split up, some ending up at Ikea (some
may argue shopping would be a better Sunday activity!!).
Eventually we arrived and
much credit must go to the young
After the previous day’s
wicketless toil it again proved hard work and the first wicket did not come
along till the 23rd over, Phil finally taking our first wicket of the weekend.
Nige then struck twice as he turned back the years with his "dobly"
seamers ( Chesh remarked it was one of the worst actions he had seen). Callum
picked up a wicket, but some very lusty blows at the end gave the hosts a very
good score. It had been a very good effort by the nine men of Thoresby.
After tea Phil opened due
to his early departure and he made an early departure!!!. Run out after the
shock of hitting a nice drive second ball. As the previous day Hazel played a
number of quality shots before getting a peach. This brought together Rich and
Ben. These two, both seventeen, played with great maturity. Ben blazed the ball
to all parts hitting five sixes, some of which were huge.
He really did deserve a
maiden ton but fell to a good boundary catch. Rich then took control and along
with Nige took us to the brink of a remarkable win. But they both fell in quick
succession and it was left to Chesh to try and take us home. When Chesh fell
with two balls remaining it was left to Billy to try and hit the winning
boundary.
In the end it was very
disappointing to lose but heart has to be taken from the two youngsters’
innings and the spirit shown in getting so close to beating a very good young
As they say there is always next weekend!!!!!!
