ATTENBOROUGH (4)    26-1

Strange that the day after putting in such a good performance against Worksop we had a game that had a number of similarities with Worksop away last year. We only had ten, late arrivals, poor pitch, horrible day and bad batting. This time we were bowled out in 12 overs after having been 10-0. In fact we had a second game and did not do much better!!!. Robbie was in his element as around 10 points were accumulated by the team for his annual trophy placings. Only Rob, Chesh and Phil managed to escape a point. Lee topped the poll with 4. This was just a game best forgot, a welcome week off from the league next week.

Sunday 3rd July

Caythorpe  (Lincs) (4)  214-5

Another poor Sunday performance, although it was good to see Ben back in the runs.

Due to fielding a weak team and previous batting collapses Nige decided to field first on a very pleasant day.
Rich and Hazel bowled well to start with but could not get a breakthrough. This enabled the home side to start and build a large score although in previous seasons this total would have been within reach. Hazel looked good until he again fell playing the pull shot, Rob kept Ben company for a while until he was yorked. Rich also hung around a while before being bowled. Nige managed to pick square leg out for an easy catch. So 88-3 soon became 104ao as the lower order were blown away. Ben fell just four short of fifty as he was starting to run out of partners.

Farndon (4)      85-4

This game saw a much improved performance even though it still ended in defeat.

Nige won the toss and elected to bat on another hot sunny day and from a position of 63-1 after 16 overs we somehow managed to be bowled out in the forty first !!! over. Callum’s innings was the only one of note.

After tea Billy and Rich bowled excellent spells with Billy bowling eight maidens out of ten to finish with 0-6. Rich took four wickets at the other end and at the half way Farndon were 31-4. Nige and Callum then came on and after Callum twice nearly dismissing the Farndon captain it became much easier as Farndon cruised to victory in 30 overs. A special mention to Lee who kept wicket really well on a turning pitch.

Sunday 17th July

Kimberly (0)   229-3

Thoresby (4)   231-3

At last we managed to put in a really good performance batting and bowling. But the highlight of the day was the quality of the pitch.

Nige lost the toss and we were sent out to field on another hot day. Hazel and John opened up and bowled steadily until John lost his line. Nige then came on and kept things tight. Hazel finally made the breakthrough in his sixth over. Billy came on and probably turned the match with a stunning caught and bowled. Rich also bowled a good spell, although he came in for punishment at the end. All in all it was a good display with everyone sticking to the task, special thanks to Callum’s dad Malc for helping out at the last minute.

In reply Chesh and Hazel started off on fire with 65 on the board after ten overs, Hazel really started to play well after being dropped a couple of times. It was a great surprise when Chesh was out to another great caught and bowled. Callum played a few good shots before getting bowled. Rich joined Hazel and kept the momentum going and victory was in sight when Hazel fell. Nige joined Rich to see us through to victory with two balls remaining.

Sunday 7th August

THORESBY (4)              295-5

FARNDON (0)                156 ao

Hard to imagine we were bowled out for 84 last time against Farndon.

Farndon won the toss and surprisingly opted to field. Nige and Ben opened and from the first ball which was despatched for six Nige really went for his shots (getting the previous day’s horror shot out of the system!!! ). Ben also played well and was just getting into his stride when he edged to the keeper. This brought Callum to the wicket, he made his maiden half century on this ground last season. He repeated the feat this year, this time it was a far more aggressive innings which just shows how he has improved. Nige went through to a hundred and fifty before he was run out. Lee, Callum and Rob all fell before the end. This was our highest Sunday score for many a year.

After a superb tea, Farndon were never anywhere near the required run rate as Hazel and John bowled really well with Hazel getting four wickets and John one. Phil then came on and after a shaky start found a good line to take three wickets. Farndon were dismissed with four overs remaining to make it three games unbeaten.

Sunday 14th August

Thoresby (0)   146-4

Attenboro (4)  147-2

This was a marked improvement on our fixture at Attenboro but still defeat.

Nige won the toss and elected to field, partly due to Casey being on babysitting duties. Slow progress was made against a decent opening attack who found a fair bit of help in the pitch. Ben was the first to fall, edging to the keeper. Hazel joined Nige and the score began to move before Nige was caught trying to push the score on. Hazel then fell in the same manner and same fielder. This brought together Rich and Chesh who finally got on top of the bowling with a very quick stand of fifty. Chesh fell as his cold (man flu !!!) finally took its toll. He really did look ill when he returned to the pavilion. Another good stand followed with Scott hitting what is believed to be his first ever six. The total was a little below par but did give some hope.

As it turned out it was nowhere near enough, given the start of fifty from the first six overs. In the end it took thirty four overs to get the required runs. All the bowlers tried their best although the wicket had become very flat. A special mention for Ben who was the pick of the bowling.
