Thoresby Colliery II (20)           150 all out

Wiseton (5)                              139 all out

Thoresby somehow managed to pull victory from the snapping jaws of defeat in a close encounter with bottom-of-the-table Wiseton.

Halfpenny and Evans opened up against the brisk 19-year-old Brindley and the experienced Bell. In only the fifth over Evans was surprised by extra bounce from the youngster and a leading edge flew to gully. Chatterton then tried to hit himself out of his frustrating run of low scores by playing a shot a ball. He soon picked the wrong one though, and was caught behind cutting a ball from off stump.

Halfpenny and Wood set about mending the damage and steadily put together a partnership. A change of bowling did the trick for Wiseton, as Woods was caught behind off the leg-spin of Moden. Norm Garden then played his now customary knock-it-into-the-gaps innings and, with 10 overs left, Thoresby had built themselves a good launch pad for the final assault.

Then it all went horribly wrong again. Halfpenny missed a straight one from Moden. Garden played on next ball from Bell. Godfrey was LBW in the next over. Of the rest, only Richie Garden could muster a useful contribution in double figures. So Thoresby went to tea 30 short of their target.

Carter and Mather (63 year-old, in trouble with the wife for withdrawing from umpiring and playing instead!) opened up well for Wiseton, especially taking a liking to Flinton’s opening two-over cafeteria extravaganza. It took an excellent climbing catch from Richie at cover off Woody’s experimental long-hop to get us a start.

Even then the runs continued to flow. But Chatterton came good with important wickets in his second and third overs that at least gave Thoresby some hope. The turning point really came when Wiseton skipper Picksley tried to turn Woods off his hip and was well taken low down by Lee Willis at square leg.

Bell and Brindley both struck a number of lusty blows as Thoresby continued with attacking fields. The introduction of Norm Garden, drifting in off the wind (that’s the ball, not Norm) was important. First he bowled Bell who tried to smash him over mid-wicket, then Brindley misjudged a full toss and tamely prodded to Scott Dickens running round to mid-wicket. 22 still needed with only three wickets left.

Wiseton’s tail-enders all looked nervous and/or inexperienced. Who better to have bowling at them than Woody? And with 3 wickets in 8 balls, the skipper mopped up nicely for an unlikely but welcome victory.

So this was two sides who batted poorly on the day, with the last 6 wickets for Thoresby and the last 4 for Wiseton only mustering 38 runs between them. And with Monday’s results bunching up the middle of the table, all points are going to be crucial over the coming weeks.
