KIVETON PARK II (20) 128 for 9
THORESBY COLLIERY II (4) 116 all out
A game that
Thoresby should have won with comfort turned into an embarrassing defeat.
Things had
gone swimmingly during Kiveton’s innings; a wicket with Stuart’s second ball
and a low scoring rate got Thoresby away well. Then two more in Evans’ sixth,
including the dangerous Bullivant for a second-ball duck. After that wickets
fell regularly and Kiveton were 83-7 with 15 overs left. However youngsters
Cocks and Clark put together a vital partnership of 35 in 14 overs. Chatterton
had Cocks well caught at slip by Case off the final ball to give Thoresby
maximum bowling points and a modest 129 for victory.
Halfpenny
and Evans started in positive mood, helped by the wayward Gilbert. Indeed when
Halfpenny fell off the last ball of the 11th over Thoresby were
already half way to their total. But Kiveton had, by now, taken the pace off
the ball and scoring shots became less frequent. A bad spell of three wickets (Case,
Evans, Woods) in seven balls took Thoresby from 87-1 to 89-4 and suddenly the
total was getting further away!
With
Chatterton still at the wicket we were still in control but he went for one big
shot too many with 20 still required. Wickets in the next two overs saw us on
110-7 and by now Kiveton were beginning to believe they could do it.
Every run
and leg bye inched us forward but Spivey took the last three wickets with five
deliveries to end a sorry batting tale for Thoresby.
All ten
wickets lost for 51 runs. Eight batsmen scored less than seven runs. Poor
stuff.
We were
lucky that so many weather draws in the division meant that not too much damage
was done in the league table.
