Heavy rain overnight must have cast doubt in the minds of most players in the Bassetlaw area as to whether they would turn out on Saturday afternoon. But true to form, if it’s not actually raining at Thoresby then you’ll get a game.
The covers were rolled back at about
This would have been a superb decision had Thoresby had their catching heads on. As it was, Cuckney opener Trenam was missed FIVE times on his way to the only significant score of the day – twice when in single figures. Some might say he rode his luck, but he wasn’t lucky at all – it was poor work from the Thoresby boys. Running well with partner Pearson, Trenam built his innings impressively, punishing any loose deliveries.
Thoresby rang the changes with the bowling, searching for a wicket. The century stand came up in the 25th over and it looked like being ‘200-and-many’ at the end. However, the returning Evans had Pearson well caught at mid-off by Garden and Thoresby breathed something of a sigh of relief. Then, the introduction of Phil Steele proved a turning point. His controlled leg-breaks brought some normality to the run-rate, and when he bowled Trenam with a dipping full toss there was an element of control back in the game.
Although Cuckney continued to score quite well, youngster Bowyer striking the ball particularly well, they did lose wickets too. However, you would have to say that 196 was an above par score for this time of year. Steel’s spell of 10-1-32-4 was undoubtedly the highlight for Thoresby.
The Thoresby innings started in bright sunshine and the first ball from Mosgrove went for four. The next ball pitched on leg stump and hit the top of off; Halfpenny was on his way. Chatterton and Case were both ‘Keithed’ LBW by the experienced Haywood. And when Evans got a shooter, Thoresby were in trouble at 21 for 4.
Lee Willis looks increasingly impressive with the bat, and although only scoring a single, he looked in no trouble at all as the home side looked to rebuild. Skipper Woods timed the ball well as usual, but was undone by the exaggerated bounce from Riley as he pulled to mid wicket. The same bowler then had Willis top edging his cut shot to the wicket-keeper and Thoresby were 43 for 6 with more than 26 overs left.
For the second time in the day Thoresby had let Cuckney in.
But when Godfrey and Garden got together they took the job very seriously. Being positive with run-scoring, but cautious in defence, they steadily built an impressive rearguard action. Garden was particularly pleased to be at the wicket at drinks – as he commented afterwards, this has never happened before and he heralds it as a significant milestone in his cricket career.
Cuckey changed their attack, eight bowlers having a go in all. But it wasn’t until the very last over, when Garden’s slash was well taken at slip, that they were successful.
So although Cuckney would have been quite satisfied with 17 points, Thoresby took positives from the day that will help their season along. Twice, we got ourselves into poor situations but twice we came some way to getting out of them.
It’s true to say we would have had more points by not playing the game, but time spent in the middle at this time of the year is invaluable in building confidence and adjusting to the new season.
