Thoresby Colliery II (5) 124
- 8 (S. Chatterton
25. Dave Beard
3-31, Owen Jervis 2–4)
Already without Ian ½p [attending a wedding – sorry boys, first one in years!!] for the visit of league leaders Clumber Park, Thoresby were dealt a devastating blow on the morning of the game when skipper Brian Woods had to withdraw with a back injury sustained in an altercation with a fish in Bridlington market place on Wednesday.
Having won the toss and elected to bat Deaves and Delaney gave Clumber a solid start which came to an end when Delaney found Richie Garden at point. Two balls later and the in-form Gareth Beard, attempting a lofted drive, was well taken by Lee at mid off without troubling the scorers.
With 20 overs bowled spin replaced the opening seam attack in the shape of Norm and Dave, although Dave quickly removed himself after two overs having been through his full repertoire.........long hops, head high full tosses.........Chatt replacing him.
Norm bowled Dave Beard, who looked well set, with a well-flighted delivery but from then on Deaves and Jervis began to assert control. Although both bowlers bowled good deliveries, with no reward, the poor ones were despatched to the boundary.
Hutchy and Stuart came back for the last 12 overs to try and "keep it tight". Hutchy did (0-47 off 16), Stuart didn’t, 51 runs coming off 6 overs, although claiming three late wickets.
Setting out chasing 215 for victory Chatt took the attack to the visitors, despite losing Stuart early. And, having hit 25, was bowled by an inswinging yorker from Dave Beard. Godders and Norm carried on the good work before both succumbed. Casey and Lee then batted for 22 overs as Clumber rotated their bowlers in search of a breakthrough. Finally they both fell in quick succession and with Richie falling to the last ball of the 44th over a tense finish ensued. But Dave and Scott saw the home side through to a hard earned 5 points and saved a nervous Hutch a visit to the crease.
Highlight of the day from a Thoresby viewpoint was Lee's excellent effort with the bat and the way in which everyone pulled together to ensure a share of the spoils.
