Bulwell (16)                     183 for 9

Thoresby Colliery II (7)   122 for 6

The fact that this match was played for all but 6 overs with no bails, would give you some indication of the conditions facing the two teams on Saturday afternoon. The wind was whipping off the peaks somewhere north of Chesterfield and certainly wasn’t slowing down as it came through Edwinstowe. This, coupled with the lower temperatures, made the game particularly challenging. The old-stagers in the Thoresby side, of which there are many, were in agreement that this was the windiest day they had ever played cricket. As one mentioned, if you were at home you’d just have shut the door and stayed in by the fire watching the Conference play-offs. As it was, we decided a game of cricket would be a spiffing idea!

To compound matters, Bulwell were so short of cricket over the previous weeks that they decided to tip their batting order almost upside down. A dirty trick if ever there was one, because they didn’t tell us!

There we were, having them 62 for 6 after 25 overs, contemplating a total of under a hundred and, more importantly, some respite from the wind. But as the Thoresby uphill bowlers tired, Radford and Darren Spencer took full toll. With positive contributions from nos. 9 and 10, they took 120 off the last 20 overs and completely ambushed the Thoresby boys.

Evans, Hutchinson and Woods had bowled well for Thoresby but simply propelling the ball to the top end was difficult enough, without having to control its direction too. Unfortunately six overs of legspin went for a costly 54 runs.

After tea the Thoresby reply never really got in a position to attack the Bulwell total. The steady loss of wickets kept the total in check and Halfpenny was left stranded needing more run-getting support from his team mates. Only a modest single batting point was achieved whilst keeping Bulwell to two bowling points.

So, on a difficult day, more runs conceded than we would have liked and more application needed with the batting. Bulwell were a decent bunch of lads who remained positive and competitive in their play throughout, always having a sense of humour.

Special mention, too, to the umpires who stood without complaint in very trying conditions.
