Thoresby Colliery II (18)       232 for 3

Basford Mill (5)           153 for 9

On a sweltering day when merely watching was hard work, Thoresby earned a good winning draw against the good-humoured Basford Mill side.

Woody won the toss and, thank goodness, chose to bat. Halfpenny and Stuart Evans coped well with the early bounce of Mark Smith, who took a liking to the firmness of the track (not many like this at City Hospital!). At the other end Whitt (Emperor Ming to his mates) was keeping an excellent line and length. However the key, once again for Thoresby, was keeping wickets intact.

The strong and enthusiastic Street replaced Smith but the score continued to steadily climb …………. everyone began to wilt in the heat. At half way the rate was barely over 3, but the veteran opening pair began to connect with more and more loose balls, not least to save running too much. Indeed towards the end of the 164 opening stand, between-over mid-wicket conferences were abandoned because it was too far to walk.

Eventually Halfpenny (86 – 13x4) managed to loop one to deep mid off and was stretchered off for oxygen. Shortly afterwards the sprightly Evans (79 – 11x4) got a top edge to the keeper and, too, was glad to be in the shower.

Chatterton and Woods maintained the momentum, but Woody took it a stage further by panning the up-till-then economical N Smith for five 4’s in an over, then spoilt it by getting bowled off the last ball! You don’t get many ‘20’ overs ……………. But then Chatt would show us how it’s done in the second half!! Dave ‘Dancin’ Evans came in to swat a few more at the end.

A special mention here for Dave Garden who padded up magnificently, getting all the safety accoutrements in the correct bodily positions and, at the end of the innings, taking them all off again in the correct order. As he said himself, a superb effort at this stage of the season.

In all a good batting effort but we know that virtually any total can be knocked off by the right side. Would 232 be enough?

A magnificent tea (thanks Sharon, Irene, Hilary) was followed by Hutch and Stuart on top form with the ball. In only his second over Hutch tempted Robinson into an awkward pull and he spooned it up for the early breakthrough. That Stuart could bowl at all after 40 overs batting was superb, but his length, line and movement surpassed this for the ideal short spell, yorking no.3 Whitt in his final over.

Street looked strong but tried one ambitious shot too many to be bowled by Dave Evans in his first over. ‘Pablo’ Grey then played some good shots into the wide open spaces as Thoresby pushed for wickets. He had made 32 out of 56 before succumbing to Dave’s quicker ball.

Norm Garden had replaced the miserly (but tiring) Hutchinson and was settling into a superb groove of line, length and guile [Godders’ quote Norm – he actually used the word ‘guile’ in the context of your bowling]. Thoresby appeared to be well on top with the required runrate above 8 for the last 15 overs. But then Mark Smith took a sudden liking to Chatt’s second over and launched him for four consecutive 6’s, each one travelling further than the last! Thank goodness one of the Basford lads was on the football pitch at the time – he retrieved every ball for the grateful Dave Garden.

Suddenly it was 100 required off 14 overs with 6 wickets left ……… and this total was in range! Luckily skipper Woods was in reserve and, after settling things down in his first over, had the patient Carlisle caught at short fine leg by Hutchy in his second. Four overs later and the dangerous Smith was well stumped by Godders when playing a wild swipe off Brian. So after a nasty wobble, Woody and Norm had firmly put the ball back in Thoresby’s court.

Norm had his just reward for a tremendous spell with two wickets in his 10th over. The returning Chatt took the ninth wicket for the extra point off the final ball of the innings – the ambitious Smith attempting to hit the ball for 7 to gain a point for Basford! Worth noting only 4 extras in the entire innings, too.

A pleasant game against very creditable opponents on a proper summer’s day. A winning draw by about 80 runs looks comfortable, but it wasn’t, it took a real team effort from Thoresby who are finally coming back to their form of last year.
