Thoresby Colliery II (20)           114 for 5 (46 overs)

Basford Mill (2)                       75 all out (37.2 overs)

Will the rain stay off? Will I still be able to scamper that quick single? Will I need a crane to lift me out of bed in the morning?

All these questions and more were running through the mind of the more experienced cricketers (i.e. most of those on show in the match) at the start of the 2005 season.

Thoresby’s team was brightened by the reappearance of the ever-keen Phil Steele and the first showing of Sam David. Paul Hutchinson, still adjusting to his exhausting new shift pattern at work, was thankfully on a ‘playing’ weekend.

We arrived at the City Hospital ground to find the usual April wicket – lovingly prepared but inevitably damp, green, slow and low. Skipper Woods, fresh from reconstructive surgery (his knee, folks, despite requests for several other parts of his body to be remodelled) duly lost the toss and was inserted. To be honest, never a bad thing on the first day.

To say that Halfpenny and Evans were their usual circumspect selves, is an understatement. Initially pleased to be out there at all, then delighted to be able to see the ball, and lastly overwhelmed to actually hit the odd delivery, scoring runs was the last thing on their minds for some while. 8 runs off the first 10 overs, 27 off the first 20, tells its own story. But the crucial factor was that no wickets had been lost.

The score inched forward, then accelerated a little. Halfpenny tried to confuse the opposition by using a succession of bats, running off the field at random times to replace them. Left armer Taylor tried to mesmerise Thoresby with his threatening array of full tosses and wide half-volleys. Meanwhile the awaiting batsmen cursed the Snail Brothers for their slow scoring rate. Strange that once their turn came, the pitch held surprising difficulties!

130 would have been a good score but Thoresby came up a little short.

However, the constant fall of wickets through the Mill innings was reassuring. Obvious first-game rustiness accounted for many of them, although Hutchy’s direct-hit run out from fine leg would have taken a wicket at any time of the year. Stuart Evans, once again defying the years to open the batting and bowling, took three crucial wickets, including that of Basford skipper Bosworth for a 10-over nought!

Sam David gave us the perfect delivery first ball after drinks to hit Patel’s off stump, leaving Basford on 39 for 7. A spirited partnership of 25 was only broken by a fortunate LBW decision off Woody, but after that, the inevitable capitulation. Chatt’s customary dismissal of the bamboozled no.10 and then another direct hit from Hutchy closed the innings.

A satisfactory start, then, on a workmanlike pitch against opposition that should have been relegated from this division last season. Next weekend’s double-header against Cuckney and Welbeck should give us more of a measure of what this section has to offer.

Oh, and the crane to get us out of bed? Well no, but certainly a good pull-up from the missusJ
