WORKSOP (2)                                 148 all out

THORESBY COLLIERY (20)        149 for 4

This was not quite as easy a win as the scores would suggest, but was another excellent team performance.

Worksop won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat on a very overcast day. Say and Naeem were quickly into their stride getting good movement from a bouncy and quick pitch. Say got the first wicket having Worksop skipper Bentley lbw to a fine delivery. Naeem then struck at the other end, getting Pym to edge to Nige. There then followed a period where the bat was beaten regularly without finding the edge and runs were hard to come by, in fact it was not until the twelfth over that a positive shot was played in front of the bat.

The score had moved on to 42 when the non-striker was struck a vicious blow by his partner Ward. This resulted in a long stoppage and the batsman having to leave the field. Jones joined Ward in Worksop’s best spell of the match and with the score on 109-2 with thirteen overs left a big score was on. But on came the little maestro Lippeatt to transform the game.

First he deceived Ward into a risky lofted drive which Naeem did well to catch, then next over he had Jones bowled. The middle/lower order were no match for Billy’s guile and two more wickets quickly followed. At the other end Farouq had replaced Stevie who had bowled superbly with no luck at all. Second over he struck with a ball that found the edge and Chesh made no mistake at slip. Burton became his second victim a couple of overs later when an easy chance was taken in the covers. The final over arrived with Worksop looking for more runs and Thoresby needing two wickets. Billy had his revenge on Robson who had been the only Worksop player to really score off him, one straight six was probably the shot of the innings. Robson was stumped attempting another big one, which left two balls of the innings remaining, the injured batsman returned and managed to nick Billy next ball for Nige to catch. So the big carrot of twenty points was now on offer.

After H’s wonderful tea the victory target was set about. Despite a very hostile spell from Robson and the early loss of Chesh to the same bowler Nige and Hazel put on a good stand of forty five before Nige was deceived by Burton to fall lbw. Hazel started to play some superb shots before falling to another mistimed pull shot. Stevie joined Rich and they played some very clever cricket working the ball into gaps. Stevie then fell shortly after another of his trademark monster sixes, he was well caught at cover off Burton. This brought Farouq to the crease who, along with Rich, set about scoring the required runs, it was caution at first and then both batsmen started to put the bad ball away. A couple of strange bowling changes certainly helped the cause as Robson, who had been so hostile in his first spell, found it a lot harder uphill. Farouq was particularly severe on anything short (think the verbals he received certainly spurred him on as they did with Say last year). Victory was achieved with four overs remaining.

Special mention to Billy and Farouq who both had their best games of the season so far, but again a big team effort. We now look forward to packing our cases for the long holiday trip/game to Gainsborough.
