all out
Unbelievable is the only
word that describes this game.
On arriving at the ground
we found quite a damp pitch due to water having run under the covers on
Thursday. Chesh lost the toss and it was no surprise that Worksop asked us to
bat first. A disastrous start was made as Nige fell to the third ball of the
game. Hazel fell shortly after, he also fell to Sanjay who was swinging the
ball with great skill. Rich became his third victim when he edged behind to
another superb away swinging delivery. Chesh then fell to a decent yorker from
Robson and we were in real trouble at 18-4. In fact it was starting to resemble
last seasons humiliating defeat at Worksop.
Farouq joined Stevie and
steadily they repaired the damage, Steve as usual took the attack to the bowler.
He even put the ball in the river, unfortunately this did not stop it swinging
and Farouq and Naeem quickly fell to Sanjay. Ben fell to Smith as Steve brought
up his fifty, it was now becoming a one man rescue effort. But just as the
hundred was reached he was caught on the boundary which left the score at
101-9.
What was to follow was
beyond everyone's wildest dreams. Billy joined Say with the instruction of
hanging around and trying to scrape a few more runs. But after both players
were dropped they started to take control first with caution and then with
aggression. Say went through three bats, the final one being Cheshs, although
when Chesh took it out to him he said there was nothing wrong with the old one.
Cheshs reply was short " its crap use this". The ball then
disappeared to all parts, a huge six that also went into the river brought up
his fifty. But the best was saved for the last over, two consecutive sixes the
second of which went out of the ground into the supermarket car park. Now i
have seen many strange sights over the year at cricket games and we have all
joked about putting a fielder in a car park when the ball is hit there but it
actually happened in this one. When the next ball was bowled the fielder was
still in the car park. In fact he was still climbing the wall two balls later.
He also injured his hand and was unable to bat.
So an amazing partnership
ended unbeaten with Billy playing the innings of a lifetime especially for
someone who is so reluctant to bat. Say again showing his natural talent in a
crisis.
A very weary Say and Naeem
opened up and bowled with good control , Naeem getting the breakthrough when he
had the worksop skipper lbw. Say had been replaced by Stevie who initially
swung the ball to great effect, then the wind changed direction and the ball
stopped swinging. So Chesh called for his banker in Billy and you guessed it he
clean bowled both batsmen to put us on top.
After getting out of jail
with the batting Chesh adopted a cautious approach with very defensive field
which pushed the run rate up. A great throw from Rich effected a run out to get
rid of Jones who had looked dangerous. Hazel was then brought into the attack
and straight away he swung the ball. He was unlucky when Nige put a sharp
chance down but Nige made amends by catching the same player shortly after.
With an impossible run rate Worksop tried for more bonus points but Billy came
up with two more wickets before the Hazel/Nige combination accounted for the
final two wickets. As mentioned earlier Worksops last man was unable to bat due
to his climbing injury.
How we ended up with twenty
points out of this game is something of a mystery but i suppose it says a great
deal about our strength in depth.
So we go into this weekends double header with Farnsfield / Marshalls in great spirit.
