GLAPWELL (17) 240 for 7 (Rob Davison 103 n.o., Lee Topham 49,
Matt Hall 44, William Lippeatt 3 for 58)
THORESBY COLLIERY (5) 132 for 7 (Naeem Ahmed 34, Iain O’Brien 6 for 15)
A disappointing result from a game played in miserable conditions.
Despite the previous day’s rain the covers were removed to reveal a decent pitch. Chesh won the toss and with the weather forecast to improve he asked Glapwell to bat first in overcast conditions. Topham and Graney despite being beaten regularly put together a useful opening stand before Ben pulled off an excellent piece of fielding to run out Graney. Hazel had replaced the out of sorts Ahmed and quickly removed Muhamed. Say who bowled a superb spell finally got some reward when he had Topham caught behind.
At this point the game had been played for 40 minutes in light rain which started to become heavier and after consultation the umpires took the players off the field. Play restarted 25 minutes later but with the outfield and ball now wet it became more difficult for the bowlers, Glapwell took full advantage with a terrific stand between Hall and Davidson which took the score to 187 before Billy had Hall caught behind. Billy added two more wickets and Say one as Glapwell threw the bat in the closing overs. Davidson completed a superb century in the last over. This certainly was not our best fielding display but it has to be said conditions were not good.
After tea the "Dads Army" opening pair of Nige and Chesh marched out to do battle with Kiwi test player Obrian in gloomy conditions. ( Cheshs last words to Hillary were "the will’s on the sideboard" ). Steady progress was made until Chesh was given out to lbw to a ball that may have hit the bottom of the bat. As the light got worse more short balls were delivered by Obrian which the umpire chose to do nothing about. Nige was next to go deceived by a quality slower ball from Obrian. Hazel was the third wicket to fall, caught behind off Hall. Rich then fell to Obrians slower ball to leave us in real trouble. Naeem and Farouq then dug in and gradually started to play their shots, just as these two looked like they would see us through to a draw both were deceived by Obrians slower ball ( it really is some weapon when you have the pace to pin players on the back foot). Say became Obrians sixth wicket, the slower ball again doing the damage. Callum and Ben negotiated the remaining overs to at least get a few points out of the game.
Although we had the worst of the weather we were well beaten. Obrians bowling was in a different class to anything else on the day. Glapwell certainly look a very good side and won’t be far away at the end of the season.
