THORESBY COLLIERY (17)        234 for 8

FARNSFIELD (9)                            230 for 7

This was a game that went very close to living up to the previous week’s emotional rollercoaster.

Chesh again lost the toss and again we were asked to bat first, although this week the pitch did not look to hold any demons. Nige and Chesh started off slowly but as the ball got softer they began to play there shots, although Chesh was repeatedly struck by Silcock he stood firm. In fact one ball split his thumb and three times he was hit in the ribs.

Nige fell trying to work a straight ball through midwicket, this led to a flurry of wickets as we went from 83-0 to 135-5. But again the fifth wicket produced a big stand, this time it was Hazel and Naeem. It was Naeem who fell next with the score on 200. But Hazel now found a good partner in Say who took the score on to a very challenging total.

After tea Farnsfield lost two quick wickets before Hind and Franks steadied things, but just as the two were getting set Naeem took his second wicket. This brought to the wicket Farnsfield skipper Andy Edwards who was soon into his stride striking the ball really well.

At the other end Franks was smashing the ball to all parts, the pair all but took Farnsfield home.

But the turning point was when Say came back for the last 2 overs at the pavilion end. First he got Edwards caught behind in his first over and then in his next over he bowled brother Glen and had Sillcock caught behind first ball.

The hat trick failed but from the last ball of the over Chesh took a great boundary catch to remove Cresswell, the added bonus being that Franks had attempted a run and was now stuck at the wrong end for the last over. Says spell had been 4 wickets for 5 runs which after last weeks heroics was unbelievable.

Naeem began the last over with Farnsfield needing 15 for victory. A single off the first ball got Franks on strike and the second ball sailed away for six but he could only get a single from the next.

A further single left Franks on strike needing a six for victory. Naeem kept his nerve and Franks was only able to hit the ball along the ground to Ben at square leg.

What a victory, probably the best of the season in the context of the league table.
