Silcock 3 for 43)
Playing our first game since the jubilation of the
Tomlins Final win was always going to be hard, but I believe the way we won
this game went some way to equalling that day in September.
Chesh won the toss and elected to bowl first on what
looked like a very good pitch, in complete contrast to last years damp
offering. Say and Naeem bowled superbly without taking a wicket, the nearest
they came was a sharp slip chance that went down and a close lbw decision.
Veteran Billy
was introduced into the attack and, despite not bowling with his usual
accuracy, picked up the first wicket. Dave bowled at the other end and was
unlucky when Nige put down an easy chance. Farnsfield were well placed going
into the last twelve overs but the return of Naeem, and Billy’s improved
accuracy, meant that Farnsfield were never really able to up the scoring rate,
losing seven wickets in this period.
So after tea out strode the veteran pair of Nige and
Chesh to open the innings. Second over and Chesh was a little unlucky to be
given out to a ball that looked a little high. Next over and a bizarre
dismissal as Nige played forward and was struck on the pad. The Farnsfield
players went up for LBW, which the umpire turned down. The ball had ballooned
to gulley where the fielder caught it and appealed for a catch, this second
appeal was granted by the umpire.
Richard was clean bowled by Silcock as Farnsfield took
full control. Worse was to follow as Dave was bowled by the same bowler. After
a few overs of resistance Ben nicked a wide ball. Say hit a big six as he tried
to play his way out of trouble, but he fell as Farnsfield changed the bowling
to leave us in all sorts of trouble at 50-6.
Steve had stood at the other as the last three wickets
fell. Now he drew on his many years of experience; along with Naeem they first
tried to avoid humiliation. The batsmen slowly began to take control and played
shots of the highest order. Farnsfield had to resort to changes to try and break
the partnership. First Silcock was brought on at the opposite end to his first
spell - this proved a bad move as he was hammered for 22 in two overs, then
Edwards was smashed for 18 in an over, including two huge sixes from Steve.
Victory was achieved with 6 overs left with the pair
not giving a single chance.
This was one of the finest stands I have ever
witnessed, given the match situation. Farnsfield must have been gutted to lose
from the position they were in but Steve and Naeem produced a special performance.
