THORESBY COLLIERY (20)           216 for 9         (Steve Willis 45, Naeed Ahmed 51, Asadullah Butt 3 for 69)

CUTTHORPE (4)                              123 all out      (Asadullah Butt 47, William Lippeatt 4 for 47)

After last week’s awful performance this was a superb return to form.

Chesh lost the toss and we were invited to bat first, this turned out to be a blessing as we got the best of the batting conditions. Nige and Chesh made a bright start against the quality opening pair of Butt and Khan. After a stand of thirty eight Chesh fell to Butt after both batsmen had become marooned after four consecutive maidens. Nige then fell in the next over. Hazell again looked good before being out to a top slip catch. Rich who is looking better each week was next to go. Stevie at the other end was just getting into his stride, two big sixes and a number of other good shots. But just as he was looking like posting a really big score he was caught at slip. Farouq who had hung around for an hour was then bowled by the returning Khan. Naeem then decided it was time to take the game to Cutthorpe and with the help of Say upped the run rate, one huge six of Khan was a joy to watch. Naeem went through to an excellent fifty which was chanceless. Both Naeem and Say fell in the closing overs but a very good score had been posted.

After tea Say and Naeem started well but again had little luck. It was Say who got the breakthrough having Kingham well caught. The big wicket then also fell to Say Thomson being bowled by the ball of the season so far, his wicket being vital as he scored a wonderful ton on his last visit to Fourth Avenue. Naeem who had swapped ends then claimed the third and fourth wickets, this effectively ended Cutthorpes chances of winning. Billy was then introduced into the attack and was soon into his normal length and line. Billy steadily worked his way through the middle and lower order, Stevie coming on at the other end provided and excellent combination. The only thing now that looked like preventing victory was the weather but amazingly the black clouds went all the way around the ground allowing the game to continue. Butt, after a couple of lives off Stevie, was setting about trying to salvage a draw for Cutthorpe. He had also had a couple of very close LBW shouts before Stevie clean bowled him with an unplayable delivery. What a sight it is to see Stevie back at his very best after missing so much of the previous two seasons.

This was an excellent team performance with everyone contributing, but the worth of our three allrounders (Steve , Say and Naeem ) cannot be underestimated.
