THORESBY COLLIERY (20) 142 for 9 (Martin Cheshire 30, Naeed Ahmed 37, Richard Stroh 6 for 20)
CUCKNEY (4) 50 all out (Naeed Ahmed 4 for 27, Shailesh Patel 5 for 13)
Another mixed batting display saw Thoresby top the table for the first time since early 2003.
On a day when two thirds of the league programme was wiped out we arrived to find the covers on and light drizzle falling. After a delay of 15 min the covers were removed to find an unusually green pitch, last year’s fixture being played on a spinner’s paradise.
Chesh lost the toss and was invited to bat first.
Disaster struck in the second over as Nige was well caught at point from a ball that lifted a little. South African Stroh was settling into a superb line and length, bowling a quality spell at David Irvine before removing him. Richie Hope also fell to Stroh without scoring and it was starting to look like the previous week’s collapse. Stevie, who was one of last week’s heroes, was given out lbw to a ball that looked a bit high. Chesh’s long, patient stay ended when he became Stroh’s fourth victim. This was the cue for the game’s best partnership as Naeem and Shailesh took the game to Cuckney, playing some superb shots. The only way they looked like getting out was run out.
This was, in fact, how their stand was broken, with a very good throw from square leg accounting for Naeem. Say fell next ball, as he was still ruing the run out. The tail, led by Callum, managed to see out the overs whilst adding a few vital runs. Mention must also go to Billy who, in five overs, avoided facing a single ball from Stroh who finished with the figures of 6-20.
We were then met with a tea of meat pie and peas JJJJJ (not great for veggies though L).
This was a challenging score on a pitch that had a fair amount of help for the bowlers. The previous week Say and Naeem bowled well without any luck, this week they bowled even better and had a little luck.
First over brought a sharp chance that went down in the slips, but 3 overs later and the breakthrough was made. David took another sharp chance on the chest but managed to hold on. This was Say’s first victim of the season and next over two more came along, both lbw. Say repeated the feat again 3 overs later as Cuckney were in terrible trouble. At the other end Naeem was bowling just as well without reward - three overs at Stroh were unbelievable! Finally he got Stroh with a ball that jagged back and removed middle stump.
This effectively ended the game as a contest as Stroh was Cuckney’s last hope. Naeem then removed three more batsmen before debutant Aziz took the last wicket to wrap up an excellent win.
