THORESBY COLLIERY (20)        222 for 8        (David Irvine 37, Richard Hope 40 n.o., Naeem Ahmed 88, Simon Davison 3 for 50, Colin Hurst 3 for 37)

BRIDON (6)                                      191 all out     (Rob McLeod 56, Shailesh Patel 3 for 34, William Lippeatt 4 for 56)

This was a game that had plenty of incidents on and off the field.

Chesh won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on what looked like a really good pitch. The Bridon bowlers found a little bit in the pitch and Chesh was given a life when he was dropped by keeper Turner on nought. Nige was first out to a sharp catch in front of square. Farouq then followed when Spooner took a sharp slip catch. Hazel came to the crease and soon settled in playing shots of great quality. With Chesh he had took the score to sixty three, the game was then changed with the introduction of Hurst. He quickly removed Chesh, Stevie and finally Hazel. This brought together Rich and Naeem who were just starting to put a partnership together when a terrible mix up should have led to Rich being run out, but he was let off when wicketkeeper Turner having gathered a good throw somehow managed to miss the stumps twice (even though the umpire gave him out, luckily he eventually noticed the bails were still on).

After this and a few other dodgy runs the partnership flourished with Naeem starting to unleash some brutal shots, Rich on the other hand played the steady role. The pair had put on 120 runs when Naeem was well caught just twelve short of what would have been a splendid century. The innings wobbled a little in the last couple of overs with Ben and Say falling cheaply. Although the innings ended strangely with two runs wiped off the score in the last over for running on the pitch. (very odd one!!).

Say and Naeem as usual opened up with Say in particular finding plenty of movement. But Naeem struck first bowling ex Thoresby player Fenwick with a really good ball. Two overs later and Say got the other opener lbw which he quickly followed with a second wicket. Stevie replaced Naeem and quickly removed Saxelby. Spooner now decided attack was his best option smashing several boundaries. But Bridon were then reduced to 68-5 when Say bowled Spooner with an great yorker. At this point most teams would have been content with trying to get a draw but great credit must go to Bridon who continued to chase even though in trouble. Mcloud and Topham started to play shots all around the ground and although the run rate was high they still had hope.

Just as the game was reaching such an interesting point attention was turned to events on the boundary’s edge as a rather loud group of amateur drinkers set about verbally abusing the fielders. Unfortunately for the ring leader one of the spectators was a friend of the abused fielder. Although the lad still had a bit to say (through bloody lip!!!) he did leave with the promise of a later visit.

The cricket continued with Bridon starting to get into a reasonable position but it was that man "Uncle Bill" who took the vital wicket, bowling Topham with a good arm ball. Makings fell quickly trying to hit Billy over the top, well caught by Callum. Turner joined Mcloud and the two again pushed the score on. Naeem who had returned to the attack then managed to get Mcloud to misstime a pull shot straight at Chesh. Considering this was Mclouds first game this season it had been an innings of great quality. Davidson came to the crease and everyone was amazed at why he should bat so low in the order when he can play the type of shots he played here, he certainly was not giving the game up. But more controversy followed when Turner tried to claim a runner even though he had already told Chesh before the game he was struggling with an injury. Chesh told the umpires he was not happy about Turner having a runner but eventually agreed at which point Turner then withdrew his request. It all became pretty irrelevant as Turner became Billys third victim. Next ball and Billy wrapped up the twenty points by bowling last man Hurst.

This had been a superb game of cricket played in a great spirit. We all wish Bridon the best in their bids to stay in this league and existence. This was not our best performance but we do seem to have the ability to keep getting ourselves out of bad positions. It would be great if we could not get in a mess before we start to play well.

Next week sees us travel to Kiveton Park.

Footnote

The entertainment did not end with the match, the youngster did return but thankfully after a few words he was persuaded to leave.
