THORESBY COLLIERY (20)        171 all out

BRIDON (6)                                      161 all out

This was a welcome return to form in what was to turn out the season’s closest game so far.

On arrival at Ordsall we found a damp green pitch (no surprise as it was like this Thursday). It was also no surprise that we were asked to bat when Chesh lost the toss. Smart and the pacey Miller opened up for Bridon and made life very difficult particularly for Chesh who "wore a few". He was given a life when put down behind the stumps and thanks to a fair few extras the score had reached 26 before Nige was Lbw to a fast straight yorker from Miller. Chesh then started to play his shots before, with the score on 70, becoming the first of Making’s five victims. Hazel followed shortly, after hitting probably the biggest six of the season. Wickets fell at regular intervals and at 120-7 the game was in the balance, but a very useful stand of 38 by Callum and Say turned an average score into a good one on a sporting pitch. Unfortunately the final three wickets fell in the penultimate over to leave Bridon with fifty one overs to reach their target.

Tea was nearly cancelled due a crockery shortage caused by Ben but eventually we sat down to another excellent tea.

After the break Naeem was straight on target making life very difficult for the batsmen, the first chance offered was spilled at slip. Say at the other end was having a little trouble changing his line for the right and left hand openers, he too was unlucky when another chance was spilled at slip. The first wicket went to a low legside catch by Nige off Naeem before Say finally got his line right to the left hander and had him well caught at slip. Next over and Naeem had another again caught at slip. Although the bat was being beaten on a very regular basis no more wickets fell until Farouq, who had replaced Say, finally got one through and found timber. A very good stand then ensued between Spooner and skipper Smart. At 114-4 Bridon looked favourites. But Stevie stepped up and had Spooner well caught by Hazel at slip and there was hope. Then came an inspired piece of captaincy from Chesh, he brought Billy on to bowl when everyone was thinking more seam. Billy rewarded Chesh’s faith with three wickets in six balls to put us firmly in control. Stevie also removed Smart in-between Billys wickets to leave Bridon’s last pair to get 40 to win. Veteran Jones and Makin dug in and although the bat was beaten regularly they moved the score ever closer. A vital maiden was bowled by Naeem with just 11 required off 3 overs. Say stepped up to bowl the penultimate (this should have been the last over!!) and third ball he removed Makin’s off stump to win a great game of cricket.

This was another of those team performances with wickets and runs well shared out. If we can just try and avoid losing wickets in clutches (4 for 10 and 3 for 1 in this game) we can still challenge in this very open division. [ed’s comment – still challenge? We’re in second bloody place, for goodness sake!!!]
